Poem ~ Fight for Red Tower Pass - Wednesday, 04 October 1916

From the Balkan area, Romanian campaign
Targeted the union of central powers, alongside
Russian forces on side of the triple entent -
Partly by force, partly in having set eyes upon
Provinces of Transylvania and Bukowina.

Hours prior to Italy's declaration, Roumania
Made her intent open on Austria-Hungary -
Embarking on a high rocky frontline, far
Different to the western front - to initially
Encounter little resistance at Siebenbürgen.

Colonel General Arz von Straussenburg
Of Austro-Hungary army was reassigned
To the Roumania campaign, to set about
Building defences of a line of border guards;
Known as Grenzschutz and Landsturm forces.

Reinforcements came in form of Alpenkorps,
Specialized in mountain fighting - yet transport
In the area played against them, from lack
Of mules - a human version arrived in shape
Of General Von Falkenhayn, sent from Verdun.

Falkenhayn, 'Blood Miller' of Verdun, sought
To prove his strategies and set out to attack
Romanians - with him orders were not sufficient
To beat but rather destroy this enemy - but this
Would not prove so easy on mountain ranges.

Alpen Korps were to climb to the Cibin Mountain
Where their target was the Roten Turm Pass -
News passed in October's start, via Switzerland
And Vienna, of events between Carpathian
Mountains - to be known as the Red Tower Pass.

Historically the route had always held strategic
Values, having once involved Ottoman armies
And Hungarian revolution - here the river Olt
Flowed as a Romanian river - Monday 2 October
News told of Austro-Hungarian and German forces.

Belief of four or five German divisions bulked
Up the presence - possibly 15,000 soldiers
Combined from other fronts - resistance held
By Roumanians south of Transylvania commune,
Hermannstadt, where their forces remained.

Hermannstadt lying on a tributary of the river Olt,
Where the Cibin heights experienced destruction
Before, during an invasion of Mongols way back
In the Middle Ages - then a village, had grown
Into a fortified walled city, to resist any invasion.

By 1916 in the midst of a wider war, the city
Hermannstadt had already seen the Austrians
Evacuation, to be opened up for Roumanians;
Yet no invading force entered, as they held
Surrounding higher ground in their strategy.

While Hermannstadt stood open, apparently
Willing to hand over to Roumanians, their
Enemy gathered further forces from Maros
Valley - this then could have been a trap,
From which the Roumanains failed to take.

Numbers from the Maros valley through
The veins of Hatzeger Mountains, sought
To entrap Roumanians about the rear - from
Sources of Austrian press, told of a fierce
Battle that had begun 27 September 1916.

The fight had opened in the morning along
The Hatzegers northern ridge - between
Hermannstadt and Petroseny and centering
On Tulisini mountain, where at 2000 metres
The Roumanians gave heroic resistance.

While no final outcome had yet been made,
The Roumanian army had set out diversions
About Schnellenberg, Szekely and Udvarhely
Areas in defence of Tulisini's high ground; the
Army dug in with new positions and held on.

Construirea de apărare a unei linii de polițiști de frontieră;

Poem ~ Douaumont: A Pivotal Fort - Saturday, 27 May 1916 - Monday, 29 May 1916

i
In the approach to a 100 days
Of battle, the fighting still raged
About Verdun - from start
Of 21 February German intent
Was to break down the French.

A key to the city of Verdun’s
Defenses stood Fort Douaumont -
Built on the highest ground
And reinforced from start until
1913, this was a formidable fort.

Armaments had though been
Depleted by General Joffre's
Orders, in consideration
Of Germany's Belgium invasion -
That had swept aside such forts.

At the point of offensive action
In 1916, Douaumont was only
Manned by a few artillery
And 56 troops, without officers;
A depleted key Verdun defence.

ii
With pounding of large caliber
Guns, the crew retreated down
To lowest levels with weak
Defenses - 10 German engineers
Approached the deserted coffres.

Sergeant Kunze climbed inside
And opened a door - nine men
Refused entry, fearing a trap -
Sergeant Kunzel wandered alone
Through empty, echoing tunnels.

With only a rifle Kunze came
To the one artillery team, taking
Them prisoners as others
Of the Brandenburg troops came,
Assisting to secure the French fort.

Fort Douaumont located behind
German front, became a shelter
And base - the fort then
A place for German soldiers  -
Called 'Old Uncle Douaumont.'

iii
On 8 May 1916 a few German
Soldiers started to make coffee,
They used flamethrower
Fuel on a cooking fire - ignorant
Of flammable liquid being fatal.

Sudden bursting heat resulted
In detonation of nearby shells,
Grenades and stored fuel.
Within the flash firestorm, many
Soldiers died in brief seconds.

12th grenadier regimental men
Were instantly killed, while other
Men trying to escape -
Blackened from fire to be shot
Down, seen as French Africans.

The pitiful stance of each side
Still hammered away, with the
Hundredth day - hope
To regain Verdun had failed -
Germans pinned down French.

iV
With caution came one report
Breaking down of French
Was being achieved - along
With enemy wearing down
His own, in undecided outcome.

Advancement on Meuse's
Left bank, set on emplacements
Of French at Hauts de Meuse;
A line spanned Hill 304, Avocourt,
Dead Man's Hill and Cumieres.

As to how neutral a military
Critic might takes sides, came
A report by Colonel Feyler -
The Swiss officer toured line
To advise French loss was less.

Colonel Feyler as observer
Informed how French force
As defenders, with Germans
As assailants, to lead to latter
Losing 100,000 every month.

V
For French success were
Germans failures, as they
Had been driven backward -
As defenders kept ground,
Along with enemies errors.

From sources of secrecy,
Feyler noted efficiency
Of initial German units
Had been withdrawn, only
To be reformed into action.

After this second, equally
Effective gallant unit
Withdrew, to be reformed
For the third time,
Back in the Verdun front.

When on this occasion
These troops acted in
Refusal to leave trenches -
Sources told how many
Were court martiallied.

Vi
Changes in French leaders
Had seen Marshall Petain
Take command of French
Army group - General Nivelle
Took over 2nd French army.

The date of appointment
1 May 1916, when the fight
At Verdun led preparations
Up to 22 May 1916 - Nivelle
Gave General Mangin orders.

The plan was counter attack
On Fort Douaumont - with
Secrecy still maintained,
Included swift destruction
Of German sausage balloons.

Reported as a brilliant
Feat that began Monday
22 May 4.30 (a.m.?)
French trench divisions
Faced their German equals.

Vii
The lines of enemy faced
Out from Douaumont fort  -
In 15 minutes an initial French
Attack cut through to the
Second German line.

Although Germans repelled
Them twice, reinforcements
Brought in assistance - Fort
Douaumont was entered;
The fight was not yet done.

Enemy forces within the fort
Came close to encirclement -
Yet held onto north east
Corner, defending flank
Attacks of Thiaumont farm.

This came from southwest,
While from southeast, fire
Came by Caillette wood -
Over two days and nights
Were made German replies.

Viii
Infantry interspersed with
Artillery, with new Bavarian
Divisions to push back
French at Thiaumont farm -
French fell back by Tuesday.

Within night, a few hundred
Yards gained were then lost;
So the French retreated
From the fort, although they
Had not had seen a fight.

Had the two circling units
Of Thiaumont farm and
Caillette wood held, then
Fort Douaumont would
Have likely been regained.

About southern positions
Of Douaumont, the French
Held positions - An outcome
Of Verdun was yet to see any
Success made, either way.

Poem ~ Verdun: Dead Man's Hill - Saturday, 1 April - Sunday, 2 April 1916

Impression sketch of French soldier killed on battlefield - by Jamie. From an original image that can be seen at: <http://wereldoorlog1418.nl/battleverdun/battleverdun33/morthomme03.jpg> [Accessed: 1 April 2016]

i
Two Forces funnelled into Verdun
By actions of a mincing machine -
Each side pushed one for resistance,
Another for success.

Renewed phase began 6 March - from
The left bank of the Meuse, German
Reserve corps edged from the right
To hit fort Vaux.

The left bank targeted Dead Man Hill,
A valued French artillery look out -
The plan to then aim for Bois Bourrus,
And French artillery.

From awareness of preparing their
Plan, lines of French defence formed
Four divisions - the less experienced
67th division being hit.

With ease the German force crossed
The Meuse, about villages of Brabant
And Champneuville - as aimed artillery
Failed the French.

Their shells sunk harmlessly into swampy
Ground - with failing defences by evening,
Found both Regneville and Forges villages
In German hands.

Hope dipped on day 7 March, as protected
Germans marched about the failing French
Efforts - Dead Man's Hill laid in their sights
To take.

A twist by morning found over confident
Germans lacking consolidation, before
More counter attacks; Bois des Corbeaux
Was French again.

Beaten back into defence, German assault
Against Dead Mans Hill was stopped until
9 March - at Bethincourt the enemy once
More halted.

Renewed forces saw Germans fight -
Despite with their huge losses regain
Bois Des Corbeaux - four days back
And forth.

The grinding down on men raised
Losses - 82,000 Germans versus
89,000 French - until the lines again
Settled down.

Hill 304 maintained French artillery -
Advantages over advance against
Dead Mans Hill - there soldiers fall,
To turn on hill 304.

On the 20th day, main German front
Moved west from villages Malancourt
And Avoncourt - to crush the French
29th division.

In disastrous defeat started rumours;
French traitors to give positions away -
3000 were taken prisoner; totals seen
To be utter disaster.

Under the crushing stalemate of death,
The fight fell to Bois Avoncourt - crossing
Every yard of ground, as heavens poured
Torrents.

Under the deluge earth turned to vile
Mud; where gunnery sunk - wounded
Drowned in dirt, as the living were
Sucked down.

Fatigue created desperation; as thirst
Forced risks by Dead Mans Hill, where
A soldier drank between green slime
Of a pond.

Within the depths a body floated, face
Down and bloated, as if he had been
Swallowing those waters for many
Days.

ii
From France came a communiqué
Telling of a quiet night East of Meuse,
While west of the river saw a very
Different matter.

During nightime hours the Germans
Made numbers of attacks en masse;
Malancourt came under their severe
Bombardment.

Three sides of the village fell under
Siege - a situation that had been held
By French advance battalion numbers,
To last all night.

With French controlling all the exits
To the village, the troops evacuated
The ruins of Malancourt - marking
Actions about Verdun.

The fury of fighting became divided into
Two distinct parts - close to Malancourt
Was German gain of Avoncout wood;
The date March 20.

In order to break the French presence,
The Invaders sprayed liquid fire - after
Hand to hand confrontations, the French
Returned.

Days led to day March 29; the enemy
Suffered with their counter attacks,
From French artillery in combination
With machine guns.

Their aim was the Avoncourt redoubt -
What taken ground was gained to be
Abandoned with masses of their dead,
Before entrenched French.

The German presence again evolved
To Hill 304; in determined tactics each
Side weary gave surrender, or remained
Insubordinate in trenches.

Poem ~ Verdun: French Counter-Actions - Thursday, 9 March 1916

Source: File: German troops advancing during the Battle for Verdun.jpg. [online] See original image available at: <http://www.huffingtonpost.com/joseph-v-micallef/this-week-in-world-war-i_b_9281672.html> [Accessed: 9 March 2016

A communiqué by the French army's
British representative Warner Allen,
From only hours before, was to tell
Of imminent situations at Verdun.

With the curve of the Meuse about
The position of French defense forts,
Enemy advances proceeded along
Its bank on western side - prompted
By halting enemy on the eastern side.

Cote du Poivre and Douaumont
Had checked all German progress -
Within a wavering heartbeat action,
Troops pulsed from east to west.

Lying in shallow hollow of marshy land,
Forges village became an advance
Post - while main defence line moved
About Bois des Corbeaux, Bethincourt
Bois de Cumieres and Cote de l'Oie.

Despite difficulties of grand movements
French held onto advanced positions
Of western bank - to fall back about
Douaumont, preparing for any attack.

Finally French held Forges succumbed
To German assault, only after a heavy
Fight and many losses - in their need to
Regroup before turning on Cote de l'Oie
And Bethincourt, under fortunate tactics.

German Army Corps brought their
Guns, where land rose in terraces -
On the Meuse's east side, batteries
Were readied to annoy the French.

Both sides of river Meuse were open
To exposure of fire from Brabant -
Despite an apparent commanding post
The Germans, other than a foothold
In Bois des Corbeaux, became stuck.

An Allen prediction for the Germans,
Were heavy losses in any new move,
While Regneville witnessed minor
Advances, about flooded Meuse loop.

The river acted as a barrier, where
Rising waters about northern loop
Made for any impractical progress -
The German trail moved to rail lines.
