Poem ~ Greek Support of Serbia - Sunday, 26 September 1915

Source: File: Greek Army Mobilised 1915.jpg, [online] Available at: <https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Greek_Army_mobilisation_1915.jpeg> Accessed: 26 September 2015].

A treaty signed 1913, had agreed
To provide Serbia aid, if attacked
From the Kingdom of Bulgaria.

Thursday 24 day of September -
Athens, the capital of Greece,
Witnessed at noon a cabinet
Meeting - in serious discussion.

The necessity was for country's
Safety - Greece had to be seen
To act - mobilising all their forces.

This critical state conveyed
By Minister Venizelos, who
Was driven by car to Tatoi,
Speaking closely to the king.

At 4 p.m. Premier Eleftherios
Venizelos with the king, stated
That Greece needed to mobilise.

That discussion was followed
By King Constantine's meeting
Minster of war, General Danglis.
This formality led into evening.

Foregone conclusion appeared
The only possible reply to attitude
Of Bulgarian process to war.

7.30 p.m. Thursday 24 September,
When Greece's King Constantine,
By signature, gave royal decree
For mobilisation of Greek army.

Later that day, 10.40 p.m. news
Reached Athens via the press
Of the Bulgarian mobilisation.

By that night's issued gazette,
The call made for all 21 to 45
Year old men to report, within
48 hours from the publication.

Twenty classes called to their
Colourso joined the serving four;
So Greek land forces mobilised.

The final decision appeared
On posters, placed in windows
Of newspaper office's whose
Effect stirred Athens streets.

Away from homeland, a Greek
Colony in London welcomed
News by enthusiastic words.

One man connected to politics
Of his homeland, in statement
To say element of pro-Germany
Still remained in his country.

The presence of those people
Though was overshadowed by
Eleftherios Venizelos' party.

Poem ~ Greek War Rumors - Saturday, 11 September 1915

Impression sketch detail of Greek Officers at Salonika - by Jamie. See original at: http://www.illustratedfirstworldwar.com/item/fighting-men-of-greece-officers-and-men-of-the-greek-army-iln0-1916-0909-0016-001/#

With a naval history, that linked
to a heroic past of the Odyssey
And the Iliad - reality beyond
fables came in 1915, in rumours
Of Greece entering war.

An official Greek source made
Release to Reuters, how officers
Being on missions aboard, were
Recalled to Athens - a summons
To regroup the Hellenic Navy.

The complexities of the countries
Geography, already with expanded
Boundaries from Balkan wars -
Mixed in with internal politics;
Only time might tell the truth.

The recalling of Greek military
Forces suggested preparations
For war during September 1915
Such facts had no confirmations,
Beyond a Salonika conference.

Poem ~ Greece: Verge of War? - Thursday, 26 August 1915

Impression sketch of Prime Minister Venizélos - by Jamie. See original at:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eleftherios_Venizelos

A neutral nation was verging
On state of war - a growing
Situation of Greek attitudes
Against old enemies -
Founded in persecutions.

Dating back two years -
1913 saw evictions and
With other acts, made
From the Balkan wars -
By suspicion fueled fears.

A slow erosion of neutral
Countries, causing a pull
Of a destabilization process -
Leading to side with allies
Against the Central Powers.

Yet Greek contradictions
Remained, with the pro-
German King Constantine;
With his marriage and army
Influence of Germany.

Uncertain politics had led
To democratic majority,
To side against Austria
Germany and Turkey; as
King faked illness in delays.

Between the Prime Minister
Venizélos and King Schism
Threats grew - affecting
Treaty of Serbia's defences,
Under threat of Bulgaria.

Already allowed the allies
Had used isle of Lemnos,
From which to attack
Gallipoli  - making states
Of confused neutrality.

By 24 August, via Rome,
News of imminent moves
Of Greek mobilisation -
rumours had begun; by halt
Of illegal alliance trades.

The applications made out
To Turkey and Germany -
Who face actions against
Their corruptive actions,
In regard to persecutions.

A new elected government,
Under minister Venizélos,
Then met with allied entente
Power representatives,
Discussing mutual support.

A standoff was quite evident
Between Turkish leader
And the recently appointed
Greek Prime minister - still
To hear about persecutions.

In such a situation, the belief
That Greek mobilisation
Remained a likely possibility -
Although Venizélos avoided
Any definite announcements.

Poem ~ Greece: Fading Neutrality - Wednesday, 25 August 1915

Impression sketch of King Constantine I of Greece  - by Jamie. See original at:http://www.ekim.gr/xronologio/img/2/photos/large/1915.jpg

A Greek representative arriving
In Britain, spoke regarding strongly
Held belief for Greece joining war-
Their eagerness in the allies cause.

Taking place about majority
Of Greek districts, meetings held
Were against further neutrality -
Turkish quarter being against war.

Yet a Jewish presence impatient
For war - traditionally Greece
Had no argument with Germany
But relationships had tainted.

This had stemmed from siding
With Turkey, who were traditional
Enemies of Greece - distrust
Of Germany had further deepened.
