Poem ~ Fight for Red Tower Pass - Wednesday, 04 October 1916

Source: File: Red Tower at the entrance of the Pass. See an original image at: <http://www.kaiserscross.com/69501/495801.html> [Accessed 4 October 2016]

From the Balkan area, Romanian campaign
Targeted the union of central powers, alongside
Russian forces on side of the triple entent -
Partly by force, partly in having set eyes upon
Provinces of Transylvania and Bukowina.

Hours prior to Italy's declaration, Roumania
Made her intent open on Austria-Hungary -
Embarking on a high rocky frontline, far
Different to the western front - to initially
Encounter little resistance at Siebenbürgen.

Colonel General Arz von Straussenburg
Of Austro-Hungary army was reassigned
To the Roumania campaign, to set about
Building defences of a line of border guards;
Known as Grenzschutz and Landsturm forces.

Reinforcements came in form of Alpenkorps,
Specialized in mountain fighting - yet transport
In the area played against them, from lack
Of mules - a human version arrived in shape
Of General Von Falkenhayn, sent from Verdun.

Falkenhayn, 'Blood Miller' of Verdun, sought
To prove his strategies and set out to attack
Romanians - with him orders were not sufficient
To beat but rather destroy this enemy - but this
Would not prove so easy on mountain ranges.

Alpen Korps were to climb to the Cibin Mountain
Where their target was the Roten Turm Pass -
News passed in October's start, via Switzerland
And Vienna, of events between Carpathian
Mountains - to be known as the Red Tower Pass.

Historically the route had always held strategic
Values, having once involved Ottoman armies
And Hungarian revolution - here the river Olt
Flowed as a Romanian river - Monday 2 October
News told of Austro-Hungarian and German forces.

Belief of four or five German divisions bulked
Up the presence - possibly 15,000 soldiers
Combined from other fronts - resistance held
By Roumanians south of Transylvania commune,
Hermannstadt, where their forces remained.

Hermannstadt lying on a tributary of the river Olt,
Where the Cibin heights experienced destruction
Before, during an invasion of Mongols way back
In the Middle Ages - then a village, had grown
Into a fortified walled city, to resist any invasion.

By 1916 in the midst of a wider war, the city
Hermannstadt had already seen the Austrians
Evacuation, to be opened up for Roumanians;
Yet no invading force entered, as they held
Surrounding higher ground in their strategy.

While Hermannstadt stood open, apparently
Willing to hand over to Roumanians, their
Enemy gathered further forces from Maros
Valley - this then could have been a trap,
From which the Roumanains failed to take.

Numbers from the Maros valley through
The veins of Hatzeger Mountains, sought
To entrap Roumanians about the rear - from
Sources of Austrian press, told of a fierce
Battle that had begun 27 September 1916.

The fight had opened in the morning along
The Hatzegers northern ridge - between
Hermannstadt and Petroseny and centering
On Tulisini mountain, where at 2000 metres
The Roumanians gave heroic resistance.

While no final outcome had yet been made,
The Roumanian army had set out diversions
About Schnellenberg, Szekely and Udvarhely
Areas in defence of Tulisini's high ground; the
Army dug in with new positions and held on.

Construirea de apărare a unei linii de polițiști de frontieră;

Up prezența - eventual 15.000 de soldați

Zone de apărare a mare la sol Tulisini lui;

Catene montuose, visto italiano
Alpini continuano il loro successo
Contro opposizioni austriache.

Nord Est del Cuestaltra picco
Ha visto l'azione sul monte Maldeta -
Conosciuto come un settore che
Custodiva via di passaggio tra i forti
Di Maborghetto e Landro.

Trasformato in una fortezza austriaca
Le rocce del Monte Maldeta
Era stata tagliata in trincea ruvido
Sistemi diffondersi sui vantage
Punti con le batterie posizionate.

In alta manovre precari
Per i preparati sono stati attacchi
Realizzato dagli alpini, per raggiungere
Il vertice Maldeta; precedentemente
Solo Accede da mulattiere.

Un rush finale fatta a 4000 piedi,
Guidato austriaci dalla vetta -
Tenue presa italiano minacciato
Da batterie austriache - tornitura
Sul loro ex fortezza perduta.

Determinato contatore austriaca
Gli attacchi hanno affrontato problemi
Uguali a tali altezze - con piccola
Riacquista nella lotta per combattere,
Alta relative all'altezza della Carinzia.

Eppure la presa Alpini di vertice
Spinto indietro austriaco
Le piste vicine; Artiglieria
Austriaca colpito da italiano
Batterie - la lotta è sceso tranquillo.

Sudari di nebbia avevano indugiato
Per qualche giorno - quando le nubi
Sollevato, sparando rinnovata su forti
Di Sesto e Lando - feroce le batterie
Hanno sparato in Boite. Cadore.

Con le difese austriache rotti,
Attacchi simultanei, sia a Forte
Hensel, Malborghetto poi al momento
Del Carso - a fare guadagni,
In uno spazio di valori strategiche.

Già con Granudor presa
La penisola istriana sarebbe
Venite sotto italiani se il nord
Di Tarvia se l'attacco ha fatto
passagway cadere agli italiani.

Con Granudor già preso
La penisola istriana sarebbe
Venite sotto italiani dovrebbero
Il percorso a nord di Tarvia essere
Aperto fino a forze italiane.

Poem ~ Mountain Fortress Falls - Wednesday, 4 August 1915

Impression sketch of Alpini Italian-Austrian front (1915) - by Jamie. See original at: https://archivioirredentista.wordpress.com/2014/03/20/alpini-in-cordata-sul-fronte-italo-austriaco-1915/

A continued fight for grounds,
Upon the heights of Carpathian
Mountain ranges, saw Italian
Alpini continue their success
Against Austrian oppositions.

North East of Cuestaltra peak
Saw action on mount Maldeta -
Known as an area that guarded
Passage way between the forts
Of Maborghetto and Landro.

Turned into an Austrian fortress
The rocks of Mount Maldeta
Had been cut into rough trench
Systems spread along vantage
Points with positioned batteries.

In high precarious manoeuvres
For attacks preparations were
Made by the Alpini, to reach
The Maldeta summit; previously
Only Accessed by mule tracks.

A final rush made at 4000 feet,
Drove Austrians off the summit -
Tenuous Italian hold threatened
By Austrian batteries - turning
Onto their lost former fortress.

Determined Austrian counter
Attacks faced equal problems
At such heights - with small
Regains in the struggle to fight,
High about Carinthian heights.

Yet the Alpini hold of summit
Pushed back Austrian from
The neighbouring slopes;
Austrian artillery hit by Italian
Batteries - the fight fell quiet.

Shrouds of fog had lingered
For some days  - when clouds
Lifted, firing renewed on forts
Of Sexten and Lando - fierce
Batteries fired in Boite. Cadore.

With Austrian defences broken,
Simultaneous attacks at both
Fort Hensel, Malborghetto then
Upon Carso - in making gains,
In an area of strategic values.

Already with Granudor taken
The Istrian peninsula would
Come under Italians if north
Of Tarvia if the attack made
passagway fall to the Italians.

With Granudor Already taken
The Istrian peninsula would
Come under Italians should
The route north of Tarvia be
Opened up to Italian forces.

By Jamie Mann

Sredi strannykh istoriy Karpatskogo
Gory, vklyuchennyye boy pekhoty
Outpost, vo vremya shtorma tyazhelogo snega.
Shestichasovoy boy prodolzhalsya, kak suchki
Iz belogo veshchestva brosilsya o nikh.

Avstriytsy stolknulis' s russkimi, i tol'ko
Nebol'shoye rasstoyaniye pyatidesyati yardov mezhdu nimi.
V protivnom soyuza vzaimnogo obvineniya, kak
Storony nashli samosti podvergayetsya vnezapnoy
Avalanche, chtoby zastryat' i polovina pokhoronen.

S snega do talii, ne v sostoyanii dvigat'sya,
Soldaty, kak kornevykh derev'yev, vse yeshche borolsya.
Muzhchiny prodolzhali strelyat' drug na druga -
Odin za drugim strel'ba drug v druga.
Togda sil'nyy sneg prishel v drugoy osen'yu.

Russkiye byli brosheny protiv avstriytsev;
Tumbling i poteri iz ruk oruzhiye -
Pochti v udush'ya, ruka protiv ruki,
Opredelennyye armii svoditsya k bor'be s
Bezoruzhnym v sugrobakh, chelovek protiv cheloveka.

V drugom meste, dal'she po doline, bor'ba
Stal svoditsya k patsifizma - bez umeniya
Dlya voyevat' v takikh usloviyakh, russkikh
Dvinulsya vpered i pomog avstriytsy,
Chtoby spasti svoikh tovarishchey ot snezhnykh zanosov.

S pomoshch'yu etogo metoda avstriytsev, na nomer sorok,
Byli vzyaty v plen - mnogiye iz soldat
Stradaniye s obmorozheniyem - vo, kogda dvenadtsat'
Iz svoikh muzhchin poddalsya i zamerz,
V gornoy pod"yema Vengrii kraya.

Yeshche dal'she vniz v nizmennoy strany,
Rabota v predgor'yakh, uvidel tretiy
Armiya o Dunajetz v boleye prostoy boy -
Sushilka strana pod yarkogo solntsa, gde
V ozhidanii tret'yego voysko dvinulos' na Carcow.

Situatsiya y armii sidel na
Reka Dunajetz k litsu avstriytsev;
Stremyas' idti dal'she Krakove - vrag
Zashchita goroda bylo skazano, chtoby byt' sil'nym -
Bol'shoy korpus s bol'shim kolichestvom artillerii.

Yezhednevno avstriyskaya obstrel v devyati milyakh byl
Napravlennaya na Tarnuv - pri podderzhke nemetskogo
Divizion - avstriytsy sdelali mnogo atak,
S nochnykh strelkovykh rasstrelov - dvukh avstriyskikh
Storony prevratit' ikh tsel' na rossiyskom uchastke.

Eto prevratilos' v nochnoy ataki, a avstriytsev
Konvergentnaya s dvukh storon - ne znaya,
To, chto russkiye na samom dele snyaty -
S mnogo putanitsy v temnote, oni
Poteryannyye napravleniya napadat' drug na druga v polete.

V drugom meste s liniyami s kazhdoy storony
Na nizhnem Dunajetz oblasti, byli transhei
Ne proshlo i dvadtsati yardov drug ot druga - s ispol'zovaniyem stropov,
Sila granaty brosayut drug na druga,
Pri chastykh peremiriya obmenyat' produkty pitaniya.

Eto kontrastiruyet s ozhestochennoy nenavistnogo srazhayushchikhsya -
Na odnom nekotorom sluchaye, kogda avstriytsy
Ne udalos' vypolnit' usloviya peremiriya, russkiye
Vzyal ikh mest' - na perekrytiya nebol'shoy
Vodopad, chtoby massy kholodnoy vody na vragov.

O Zaklieyn, na peredney Krakove, priyekhal
Odin strannaya istoriya privlech' Tchuvash
Soldat - bol'shoy strashnyy chelovek Volgi.
Vo vremya boya byl nayden rebenok, kotorogo
Otsutstvuyushchiye roditeli priveli k armii delayet prinyatiya.

Nazvannyy papasha Nikolay, posle velikogo knyazya,
Rebenok byl kormila gromozdkoy Tchuvash -
Kto utverzhdal, opyt medsestra, buduchi prozhival
V SSHA - na nuzhdy moloka rebenka, on uznal, kak
Moloko bylo pod rukoy vo vrazheskom Tchuvash lagerya.

Volga chelovek vzyal polnoch' vylazku, chtoby poluchit'
Nekotoryye moloko - tol'ko, chtoby byt' ranen v nogu i sdelal
Zaklyuchennyy - zaderzhannyye uznali o yego medsestroy
Prichiny v provedeniya reyda, ustavilsya na nego s molokom
I otpravil yego obratno na svoyu storonu, chtoby nakormit' rebenka.

Poem ~ Strange Stories: Baby At War - Saturday, 3 April 1915

Impression drawing of Volga soldier and baby - by Jamie Mann

Amid strange stories of the Carpathian
Mountains, included fight of an infantry
Outpost, during a storm of heavy snow.
The six-hour fight continued, as swirls
Of the white stuff rushed about them.

Austrians faced the Russians, with only
A small distance of fifty yards between.
In opposite union of a mutual charge, both
Sides found selves subjected to a sudden
Avalanche, to become stuck and half buried.

With snow up to the waist, unable to move,
The soldiers, like rooted trees, still fought.
Men continued to shoot at each other -
One by one shooting each other down.
Then the heavy snow came in another fall.

Russians were thrown against Austrians;
Tumbling and losing go of their weapons -
Almost in suffocation, arm against arm,
The determined armies reduced to fight
Weaponless in snowdrifts, man against man.

Elsewhere, further down the valley, fighting
Became reduced to pacifism - without ability
To fight in such conditions, the Russians
Moved forward and assisted the Austrians,
To rescue their comrades from snowdrifts.

By this method Austrians, to number forty,
Were taken prisoner - many of the soldiers
Suffering with frostbite - during when twelve
Of their men succumbed and froze to death,
In a mountain ascent of Hungarian edge.

Even further down in the low-lying country,
The operation of the foothills, saw the third
Army about Dunajetz in an easier fight -
A drier country under bright sun, where an
Awaiting third army marched on Carcow.

The situation of the third army sat upon
The River Dunajetz to face the Austrians;
Eager to move on Cracow - the enemy
Defence of the city was said to be strong -
Large corps with large amounts of artillery.

Daily Austrian shelling across nine miles was
Aimed at Tarnow - with support of German
Divisions - the Austrians made many attacks,
With nighttime rifle fusillades - two Austrian
Parties turn their target on a Russian section.

This turned into a night attack, as Austrians
Converged from two directions - not knowing
That the Russians had actually withdrawn -
With much confusion in the darkness, they
Lost directions to attack each other in flight.

In another place with the lines of each side
On the lower Dunajetz area, were trenches
Barely twenty yards apart - with use of slings,
Force of grenades being thrown at each other,
With frequent truces to exchange foodstuffs.

This contrasted with fierce hateful battling -
On one certain occasion, when Austrians
Failed to honour truce conditions, Russians
Took their vengeance - by damming a small
Waterfall, to let mass of cold water onto foes.

About Zaklieyn, on the Cracow front, came
One strange story to involve a Tchuvash
Soldier - a large fearsome man of the Volga.
During the fight was found a baby, whose
Missing parents led to army making adoption.

Named Papasha Nikolai, after the Grand Duke,
The baby was nursed by the bulky Tchuvash -
Who claimed nurse experience, having resided
In USA - for baby’s milk needs, he learned how
Milk was at hand in the enemy Tchuvash camp.

The Volga man took a midnight sortie to gain
Some milk - only to be shot in the leg and made
A prisoner - the detainees learned of his nurse
Reasons in making the raid, fixed him with milk
And sent him back to his side, to feed the baby.
