Poem ~ When will Peace Be? - Wednesday, 22 September 1915

Source: File: Female delegates to the 1915 Women's Peace Conference in The Hague, aboard the MS Noordam. 1915.jpg, [online] Available at: <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woman's_Peace_Party> Accessed: 22 September 2015].

Another debate asserted
The subject - over the likely
Length of one European war.

This was the question made
By theorists based in New York,
Of Earl Kitchener’s statement -

That Germany ‘had almost shot
Their bolt’ - made in the week
Beginning 13 September 1915.

A challenge taken on by American
Independent strategists, who had
Made neutral war observations.

Their findings proved encouraging
To the allies, but counterbalanced
By future Germans decisions.

What might Germany decide,
Over next ten months? Sources
Of statistics shared with English.

Their accuracy was likely flawed;
As probable enemy forces, stayed
Same totals as they had in 1914.

American speculation centered
On Austro-German Reserves
Forces, by calculated projections.

From future 1917/1918 cavalry
Classes to be 1,200,000 reserves,
Along with 3,200,000 in the field.

Yet Germany would face 500,000
In the field and 500,000 reserves
To make them a difficult winter.

By spring of 1917, the Germans
Would likely be forced to narrow
Their fronts; East and the West.

But if Russia became defeated
By the end of winter, Germany
Might gain an equal army.

Conclusions from the experts
Of American strategy, slightly
Anticipated German 'distress.'

Using all best figures available,
The subject was open to revision;
Dependent on next few months.

Poem ~ Belgium Youth: Photo Spy? - Tuesday, 21 September 1915

As security on home front
Continued with alertness
To suspicious activity - one
Incident occurred to involve
A Belgium and a Gun Station.

On a Saturday, dated 18
September 1915, a young
Bank clerk, took a trip out
From his London lodgings -
At the Morley Hotel, Strand.

Later arriving at a military
Installation, somewhere
In the vicinity of London -
George Waltjens walked,
On the Saturday afternoon.

Among the Royal Marine
Artillery Crew on duty,
Gunner Dicks observed
The civilian youth lift up
A camera, to take a photo.

With his obvious subject
As the Gun Station, Dicks
Alerted a sentry, who took
Immediate action, to arrest
Young George Waltjens.

Under arrest, the clerk
Was conveyed to civil
Police - there followed
His court appearance,
At Bow Street Station.

With the only evidence
Given by Gunner Dicks,
The charge was taking
A photo without getting
Any naval permission.

Magistrate Mr Hopkins
Took the matter seriously.
Walter spoke in broken
English; he did not realise
He had done any wrong.

Mr Hopkins interrupted
Him to say that this would
Not do - with result that
Young George Waltjens,
Was remanded in custody.

Poem ~ German American Hoax - Monday, 20 September 1915

Impression of California Eagle logo - by Jamie. See original at:
https://archive.org/details/caleagle?sort=-publicdate

A profitable hoax had emerged,
Created by German Americans;
Claiming destruction of entire
British fleet - with photographs.

A trail dated back to August 29
Of the 'California Eagle' magazine,
Copied by Westminster Gazette -
Saturday September 18 1915.

Issued in no. 45 of volume 23,
For a one and only appearance -
In one sunny Californian day,
Made profits for their publishers.

The reproduced Gazette article -
Professed by a heavy American
Typeface - for the Berlin claim
Of British losses of 40,000 men.

Laid out in black and white,
Evidence lay in a lengthy list
Of supposed lost British ships;
U.S. press reacted in enquiries.

The wild claims, prompting
investigations, ran to hundreds
Of dollars, as 'California Eagle's'
Sales soared, over that one day.
