Poem ~ War On Dresses - Saturday, 11 March 1916

Impression sketch of The 'Lucie' Gown: Barkers Advertisement. The Daily Telegraph p11 col 5-7 - by Jamie. From an original image that can be seen at : <http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/ww1-archive/12189272/Daily-Telegraph-March-11-1916.html> [Accessed: 11 March 2016]

Amid murmurs of shortages and needs of economy,
Came latest call for cutbacks with extravagance
Of women’s fashions - National Organizing Committee
For War Savings had highlighted wastes, already
Made in domestic places and motorcars for pleasure.

Reformed values were to be issued by Press Bureau
To highlight the crisis of wartime - to suggest
How most women realise 'bad form,’ in buying fancy
Varieties of dress - pointing out facts that many
Within the rich and poorer class kept up the habits.

Any excessive occupation in ladies buying fashion
Was to be frowned upon - advice being
To avoid boots, shoes, gloves, hats, stockings or veils
Of luxury quality - stating that only new
Clothes should be bought, when absolutely needed.

Such new clothes ought to be of durable standard
And flexibility to wear for all occasions -
National Organising Committee for War Savings said
A halt in dress expense can only be wise
In times of trade upheaval, till peace was secured.

Alongside lay another agenda, from the National
Organizing Committee for War Savings,
To set free all labour in the clothing trade, assuming
They were not caged animals, for war
Reasons, as posters proclaimed 'Bad Form in Dress.'

Poem ~ Portugal: Puxado Para War - Sexta-feira, Março 10, 1916

Esboço impressão de tropas portuguesas que embarcam para Angola - por Jamie. De uma imagem original que pode ser visto em: <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_campaign_in_Angola> [Acessado em: 10 de março de 2016]

i

ii
Como uma república em 1910 Portugal,
Em 1914 foi governado pelo Partido
Da República Português - certamente
Juntando-se a guerra serviria
Para salvar suas colónias africanas?
Grã-Bretanha convenceu o contrário.

tensões Swift tinha começado a formar
Entre Portugal ea Alemanha;
Começando com operações U-barco,
Que bloquearam a Grã-Bretanha e, assim,
O mercado dos produtos portugueses;
Enquanto isso, eles enfrentaram em Angola.

Português e alemães lutaram
Além das fronteiras africanas, onde
sucesso alemão levou a ocupado
Parte de Angola, mas depois retomada -
Uma campanha Sul-Africano britânica
derrota feito de tropas alemãs.

Sob confrontos não oficiais,
Oficial 1916 neutralidade continuou
Entre Portugal ea Alemanha,
Até 23 de fevereiro; após o pedido
Pela Grã-Bretanha, 36 barcos alemães detidos
Em Lisboa portos ficou internado.

9 March1916 - este ato final levou
declaração de guerra da Alemanha
Em Portugal e vice-versa -
Dentro deste primeiro dia, notícias disse
partidas apressadas de alemão
Famílias, deixando o país.

Relatórios espalhou para dar uma ordem,
Assinada pelo Ministro Marinha,
Para o capitão Leotto Rego e
Oficiais da marinha - permitindo
navios alemães que esperam na escora
No Tejo, para se tornar utilizado.

Paralelamente, oficial provável
palavras espanholas em causa como
A declaração de guerra não
Assist qualquer situação de Espanha
Posição neutra - expectante
De sentir os efeitos da guerra.

Poem ~ Portugal: Pulled into War - Friday, 10 March 1916

i
Amid the countries of neutrality,
Wavered the Portugal Republic
On the Iberian Peninsula - a land
To mark the most westerly country
Of Western Europe, bordering
With Spain and the Atlantic Ocean.

Since prehistory these lands
Had been fought over - to include
Celts, Romans, nomadic Visigoths
And Suebi-Germans - eventually
Leading to an empire of the county
Of Portugal and times of intrigue.

1128 saw battle of Sao between
A son and mother - the successor,
Marmede, making a self-declaration
As Prince of Portugal, to become
King of Portugal by 1143; a country
Developed by German connections.

Nomadic Goths formed Visigothic
Kingdoms of Spain and Portugal -
Over 400 years, Suebi-Germans
Evolved post Roman provinces
Of Galacia within north Portugal,
Until final integration with Visigoths.

With a heady history of turmoil,
Portugal’s neutrality in 1914
Was formalised, forced by hand
Of Britain - with declaration of war
On Germany, a belief was Portugal
Would be ineffective in self-defence.

A wavering relationship had
Developed between Britain and
Portugal, whose colonisation
In Africa almost caused a war
In 1890 - With Britain’s orders
To get out, Portugal relented.

ii
As a republic by 1910 Portugal,
By 1914 was ruled by the Party
Of Portuguese Republic - surely
Joining the war would serve
To save her African colonies?
Britain persuaded otherwise.

Swift tensions had begun to form
Between Portugal and Germany;
Beginning with U-boat operations,
That blockaded Britain and thus
The market of Portuguese goods;
Meanwhile they clashed in Angola.

Portuguese and Germans fought
Across African borders, where
German success led to occupied
Part of Angola, but then retaken -
A British South African campaign
Made defeat of German troops.

Under unofficial confrontations,
Official 1916 neutrality continued
Between Portugal and Germany,
Until 23 February; after request
By Britain, 36 German boats held
In Lisbon ports became interned.

9 March1916 - this final act led
Germany 's declaration of war
On Portugal and vice versa -
Within this first day, news told
Hurried departures of German
Families, leaving the country.

Reports spread to give an order,
Signed by the Marine Minister,
For Captain Leotto Rego and
Officers of the navy - allowing
German ships waiting at anchor
On the Tagus, to become utilised.

Alongside this, likely official
Spanish words concerned how
War's declaration would not
Assist any situation of Spain's
Neutral position - expectant
Of feeling the full effects of war.
