Poem ~ Fight for Red Tower Pass - Wednesday, 04 October 1916

From the Balkan area, Romanian campaign
Targeted the union of central powers, alongside
Russian forces on side of the triple entent -
Partly by force, partly in having set eyes upon
Provinces of Transylvania and Bukowina.

Hours prior to Italy's declaration, Roumania
Made her intent open on Austria-Hungary -
Embarking on a high rocky frontline, far
Different to the western front - to initially
Encounter little resistance at Siebenbürgen.

Colonel General Arz von Straussenburg
Of Austro-Hungary army was reassigned
To the Roumania campaign, to set about
Building defences of a line of border guards;
Known as Grenzschutz and Landsturm forces.

Reinforcements came in form of Alpenkorps,
Specialized in mountain fighting - yet transport
In the area played against them, from lack
Of mules - a human version arrived in shape
Of General Von Falkenhayn, sent from Verdun.

Falkenhayn, 'Blood Miller' of Verdun, sought
To prove his strategies and set out to attack
Romanians - with him orders were not sufficient
To beat but rather destroy this enemy - but this
Would not prove so easy on mountain ranges.

Alpen Korps were to climb to the Cibin Mountain
Where their target was the Roten Turm Pass -
News passed in October's start, via Switzerland
And Vienna, of events between Carpathian
Mountains - to be known as the Red Tower Pass.

Historically the route had always held strategic
Values, having once involved Ottoman armies
And Hungarian revolution - here the river Olt
Flowed as a Romanian river - Monday 2 October
News told of Austro-Hungarian and German forces.

Belief of four or five German divisions bulked
Up the presence - possibly 15,000 soldiers
Combined from other fronts - resistance held
By Roumanians south of Transylvania commune,
Hermannstadt, where their forces remained.

Hermannstadt lying on a tributary of the river Olt,
Where the Cibin heights experienced destruction
Before, during an invasion of Mongols way back
In the Middle Ages - then a village, had grown
Into a fortified walled city, to resist any invasion.

By 1916 in the midst of a wider war, the city
Hermannstadt had already seen the Austrians
Evacuation, to be opened up for Roumanians;
Yet no invading force entered, as they held
Surrounding higher ground in their strategy.

While Hermannstadt stood open, apparently
Willing to hand over to Roumanians, their
Enemy gathered further forces from Maros
Valley - this then could have been a trap,
From which the Roumanains failed to take.

Numbers from the Maros valley through
The veins of Hatzeger Mountains, sought
To entrap Roumanians about the rear - from
Sources of Austrian press, told of a fierce
Battle that had begun 27 September 1916.

The fight had opened in the morning along
The Hatzegers northern ridge - between
Hermannstadt and Petroseny and centering
On Tulisini mountain, where at 2000 metres
The Roumanians gave heroic resistance.

While no final outcome had yet been made,
The Roumanian army had set out diversions
About Schnellenberg, Szekely and Udvarhely
Areas in defence of Tulisini's high ground; the
Army dug in with new positions and held on.

Construirea de apărare a unei linii de polițiști de frontieră;

Up prezența - eventual 15.000 de soldați

Zone de apărare a mare la sol Tulisini lui;

Poem ~ The French 75's - Thursday, 10 December 1914

Source: File: "Our glorious 75", propaganda postcard.jpg, Canon de 75 modèle 1897, Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. [online] Available at: <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canon_de_75_mod%C3%A8le_1897> Accessed: 10 December 2014].

 i:

The modèle 1897 French field-gun,
‘Seventy-five’ was proclaimed
As liberator and saviour of France,
As proclaimed in Revue de Paris.

No censorship is made, in how
This gun works, to cause death,
To an enemy in its' systematic
‘Sweeping and progressive firing.’

The battery, made up of four guns,
Moves into action, then to begin
Firing - on a signaller’s receipt,
Making a given range when seen
That the open enemy is advancing.

The 75’s process is to spray shells,
Over several hundred yards -
In creation of a zone of danger,
In which nothing can have a chance.
With first shot fired, the gunner
Spins a handle, to send a second
Sideways - in zone left by the first,
To be repeated by the third shot;
By combined force, is the death zone.

At chest height in hellish rain,
Each shell bursts above the earth.
Thus a battery of four gunners,
Firing twelve shells clears an area
A kilometer in front,
And a hundred yards in depth.

To follow this strategy a second
Salvo - centres on 100 yards behind,
The first fired three shells per gun,
To clear out a same sized zone.

Then a third salvo focuses on
Another 100 yards beyond
The first - equally effective -
A dozen acres will be churned,
And cleared of anything living,
Under a pounding of 36 shells.

After the rain of bursting metal,
Hangs a silence a deafening
Noise of nothing - akin to the grave.

Propaganda of the gun
Depicts a French solider,
In new uniform of blue,
Feeding white shells,
Into a white, barreled gun.
Observed by a ghostly
Woman - with flowers
On her writing desk giving
A virgin innocence.

ii:

Designed over five years,
From the previous century,
The gun was to prove worth,
At the battle of the Marne.

Simply known as the French 75,
Created as anti-personal -
For using thin shells of Melinite,
And fused shrapnel shells.

First of a modern artillery piece,
The 75 design made allowance
For all day firing over five miles -
Of 15 rounds per minute -
Up to 30 rounds by a skilled crew.

Another advantage of this gun,
Was in recoil mechanism cycle -
Absorbing the retort’s force
In two seconds - to allow a crew
An instant following shot,
Without any need to re-aim -
Leading to the future of rapid fire.

Each 75 four-gun battery,
Would be manned by highly
Trained men - totaling 170,
Led by four officer graduates,
From engineering schools.

To function in field, each 75.
Required twelve horse teams,
Looked after by enlisted men,
Of countryside backgrounds.

These six horses were to pull
A detachable part of a limber  -
Another six pulled a further
Ammunition chest for each gun -
In total each 75-gun battery
Was assigned 160 warhorses.

Poem ~ Haystack in a Battle - Tuesday, 17 November 1914

In the Parisian Liberte, is told a tale
Of a haystack, in region of Arras,
Consisting of collected straw,
Harvested just months before.
By all accounts a normal sight,
To become a game of strategy.

This farmed hay found itself made,
Between two opposing war lines.
Two French signaller’s had spotted
The vantage point - they ran across,
Scrambling to top of stack, making
Their observations – as the fighting
Warmed up, they slid back to ground,
Back to the safety of their trenches.

With the straw barely still again,
A couple of Germans then
Ran from their side, and climbed
The stack – so then a game
Ensued amid French gamblers,
Who gained their opportunity.

Cigarettes were laid down as bets,
In timing alternative occupations,
From French to German,
Upon the mentioned collected hay.

But on day two a sad demise
Came of the innocent haystack.
During a French bayonet attack,
The straw vantage point was fired.

Elsewhere, on one foggy night,
The French resting in their trench,
Heard some sounds of accordion,
Coming from the German’s trench.

In this very section of defenses,
Was a particular patrol of Bretons.
Who were known to be dancers.
These sounds of the foggy strains
Of music, caught their feet.
As if under a spell the regiment,
Squadron by squadron,
Moved out their trench system.
In the dampness of foggy shelter,
They formed circles to dance,
To their enemy’s hypnotic music.

The next day the French payback,
Was played of a different music.
The French composition of fire,
Gave the Germans a different tune.
