Poem ~ Camp Deaths of Typhus - Wednesday, 11 August 1915

Impression sketch of Captain Field taken prisoner alongside Captain Sutcliffe - by Jamie. See original at: http://www.dnw.co.uk/auction-archive/catalogue-archive/lot.php?auction_id=73&lot_id=50170

An officer's letter published
By the Telegraph, prompted
A response from the mother
Of an involved officer.

The words of Mrs Sutcliffe
Reached the telegraph editor,
From her North Devon home,
Of Great Torrington.

The officer’s letter described
Tragedy of her son’s death -
That happened in a prisoner
Of war camp.

Captain Sutcliffe's death with
Major Fry and Captain Field;
The letter’s extract alluded
To death from typhus.

The first letter had said those
Who experience the dreadful
Environment of such camps
Can truly understand.

Captain Sutcliffe’s mother,
In stoic tones, was to write
Knowing how different their
Initial captivity had been.

Captain Sutcliffe had been
Taken prisoner at Landrecies-
All had been taken by train
To Aix la Chapelle.

While noting they travelled
By carriage of second class,
Until reaching Aix la Chapelle,
With no complaints.

With the train halted, a crowd
Gathered about the stationary
Carriage - holding men of Royal
Army Medical Corps.

One German officer turned
And address gathered crowd -
If they were civilian or military
Was not stated.

This officer was to prompt
Them to be a lynch mob;
'These are English who call
Selves Medical Corps.'

'They are just devils who do
Not attend German wounded
But put their eyes out - do as
You wish with them.'

Riled into vengeance, some
Orderlies were killed in cold
Blood; they turned attention
To the carriage.

In same intent to get British
Officers, they were stopped
By another German officer,
To challenge barbarity.

To follow this Sutcliffe's
Mother knew of no more
Complaints, nor of their
War camp treatment.

Poem ~ Deadly Sister of Mercy - Monday, 9 August 1915

Impression sketch of Bogus Red Cross - by Jamie.

Between the Baltic and Black Sea,
Stretching North to the South,
To take in most of Eastern Europe,
And into a depth of central Europe,
Was based the Second Patriotic War.

Commonly known as Eastern Front,
Where the Imperial Russian
Army faced their foes. It was likely
Along this front, that an underhand
Act occurred, by an Austrian party.

The holding of a Russian trench
One day made witness
Of an Austrian Red Cross party -
Among the number that stepped
Out onto the open desolated
Earth, stood a Sister of Mercy.

This was the name given to such
Women in role of Russian
Nurses - the shape that emerged
With this Red Cross team wore
A white headdress and a cross.

They slowly moved forward, towards
The occupied Russian trench,
In order to reach the wounded men
About - when from under her white
Smock, the Sister of Mercy aimed.

Producing guns the party opened
Fire on the Russian defence -
The sister quick to aim and maime,
Until the reaction of the Russians
Cut her down to foil the trick.

With the fraudulent Red Cross act
Stopped, Russians came out
To inspect the remains - searching
The bodies found the Mercy Sister
Was in fact an Austrian Officer.

Poem ~ Ambulance Train Inspections - Friday, 6 August 1915

Impression sketch of a train being loaded at Tilbury docks, on its way to the front - by Jamie. See original at: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2605886/Poignant-archive-pictures-ambulance-trains-transported-soldiers-wounded-First-World-War-hospitals-Britain.html

By special arrangement,
At a cost of sixpence a ticket
The public were granted inspection
Of an ambulance train, made
By the Eastern Railway Company.

Made at the Stratford
Works and on route to army
Service in France - The special train
Temporarily at No 1 Platform,
Liverpool Street Station London.

To last two days on 6 and
7th August, the ticket allowed
Viewing to see inside for full access -
The specifications at 445 tons,
864 feet long; to hold 342 wounded.

Specifically, 280 sitting
And 162 lying down patients,
Along with accommodation of staff
Of orderlies, nurses and
Doctors; in usage of every space.

Seen as cheerfully decorated
Gangways, connected corridors,
While compartments may be isolated
As needed - any patient on
The mobile hospital may be separated,

Those suffering infections
Disease had asbestos barriers
In an independent part of the train -
With kitchens, linen stores
Pharmacy and operating theatres.

All this was on view to those
Who paid sixpence - on the first
Day 2000 were sold, between 7.30 a.m.
To 10 am - a steady stream
Of public would flow until 4.15p.m.

Monies raised from public
Experience, were to fund comforts
For railway troops serving in France -
On 7th August the train
Was then due to leave for the continent.
