Poem ~ Madam Delacourt Thwarts Invaders - Monday, 21 August 1916 - Tuesday, 22 August 1916

i
When war was hardly two months old,
With the movement of German invasion
Was reaching a peak, came experience
Of a farmer's wife Octavie Delacourt.

In the month of September 1914 madam
Delacourt, aged 56 left home, Bord de Bois,
To walk on an errand in area of Vauvais -
Through forests to commune of Gournay.

Following the logging road through dense
Trees, she was startled - a hand clamped
Her shoulder - turning about to face a large
Man wearing a cap and dressed in grey.

Not knowing what a German soldier may
Look like, madam Delacourt could only
Assume that this man was of that army -
When another stepped out of the wood.

The three stood and regarded each other.
No words were spoken as these soldiers
Turned her about, indicating she should
Return back to where she had come from.

Outwardly calm but inwardly tense, madam
Delacourt started to walk slowly away from
Their gaze, then picking up her pace - once
Around the corner the woman began to run.

Despite her urgency she suddenly slowed,
As she spied two more soldiers half hiding
In a thicket, close to Fieffé farm - once again
Moving out of sight, she ran to Neuf Marche.

At this closest village the breathless madam
Delacourt began her urgent warnings - to tell
How Prussian soldiers were in the woods
Not knowing how many; only to be ridiculed.

Insistent of her story to everyone whose
Attention she gained - farmers, gendarmes,
Along with the postmistress - that there
Were Prussians hiding back in the woods.

ii
After a sequence of successful bridge raids
A German commando style force had set out
In vehicles, in the operation in race to the sea;
Three cars and a truck conveyed Prussians.

Driving through dark hours towards French
Lines, encountering resistance on their way -
At Margny-aux-Cerises, interactions with
French cavalry led to a loss of one vehicle.

The group sped away and impersonated
British troops, to cut down a French guard.
After a days of hiding they set off again,16th
September, as madam Delacourt left home.

The locals found it hard to believe, despite
Declaration of war, how Germans had made
It as far to Lower Normandy - then the post
Mistress took madam Delacourt seriously.

While the mistress telegraphed authorities,
Three volunteer Gendarmes followed madam
Delacourt's directions into the Boos forest -
Their initial disbelief became well disproved.

Attempts to detain the Prussians soldiers
Hiding in the woods failed, as all three men
Were killed - the commando raiders sped
Off in escape, to continue their mission.

Captain Walther Tilling, leading the band of
Commandos, was forced to leave one fatally
Injured man behind - from the dense forest
Of Boos, the crack of gunfire had echoed.

iii
The exchange of fire was sudden, to leave
Dead gendarmes Jules Labas and Eugene,
Along with unnamed driver and civil guard.
The sounds carrying beyond Boos forest.

Rapid fire killed three as Blacher, fatally
Injured with driver Rene Alley - Prussians
Fled, speeding off towards Manville - Police
Had heard shots echo form the Boos forest.

Warnings had begun to spread - authorities
Were warned at Etrepagny and Andelys -
Only by evening were alerts in place to say
Two vehicles on loose, one to be a limousine.

The other was a truck driven by Germans
Dressed in French uniforms; they headed
To Gurney en Bray - the evening moved on
At 22.30, two police stood at Oissel bridge.

At Tourville-la-Rivière police went to gain
Arms - bright car lights appeared, followed
By another vehicle - seen by the guards,
They took pot shots at speeding headlights.

At high speed the first car was fired on -
The second passed, unaware of police
Ahead; authority actions followed, trying
To track the German soldiers directions.

iV
Their plan had been to blow the bridge
At Oissel, but any attempt was scuppered
By alerted authorities - the two remaining
Vehicles set out to avoid their capture.

The rogue Prussians now turned towards
Saint-Aubin-les-Elbeuf, to pass onto Cleon,
Keeping to the Seine road - the Germans
Paused at Bedanne to check their vehicles.

French officials meanwhile, set out to
Concentrate at the loop of a Seine route
At Val-on Renoux - helped by an drunk
Sergeant, from Sotteville-sous-le-Va.

The six though were ambushed - then
The Prussians began to move again,
Their lights spotted close to Freneuse -
Attempts to track them still continued.

Into the next day at hour of 1 a.m.
17th September, the group encountered
Alerted guards, who attempted to stop
Them with gunfire; the cars revved up.

Yet the limousine misjudged a corner,
To speed off the road - the other car
Still carried on - a wounded Captain
Tilling and five Prussians surrendered.

Attempts of blowing French bridges
failed into nothing, as the truck on road
To Igoville halted there, abandoned -
The driver was later caught in a house.

Hiding at Tourville-la-Rivière a German
Was wounded by nervous police. Days
Later on 22 September, the last two men
Surrender in hunger, at Aubin-lès-Elbeuf.

So the actions of Madam Delacourt had
Led to failed commando raids on French
Bridges, that could have harmed allies -
An affair called the fight of Rougemare.

Capitaine Hérail sentait pris au piège par Madame Hérail;

L'accusé a alors résisté à l'émotion, incapable

Poem ~ Wife Killed, Soldier Acquitted - Monday, 12 April 1915

Impression Sketch of Captain Herail shooting Madam Herail - By Jamie Mann.

Almost like a Greek tragedy, transported
To the twentieth Century, there happened
In war betrayal and love to result in murder.

In court martial a French soldier and officer,
Captain Herail, stood in the dock sobbing -
To face the questions of a Court President.

The story unfolded before his peers, how
Prior to war, a love match had occurred
Between a handsome soldier and a girl.

For some years before the war broke this
Man and wife had lived together in passion
And affection - only the French possess.

As Captain Herail openly mourned his wife,
He spoke through broken sobs of his love
For a beautiful and wealthy strong woman.

Perhaps what bloomed from a young girl's
Love was attraction for a soldier - only
To become jealous of his country's duty.

The court learned the background of this
Man's love - also to his duty when war came,
And the necessary separation for them both.

After a time, the French wife had followed
Him to Compiegne - and refused to leave
Her husband - her jealousy was his career.

Captain Herail explained to his Colonel,
How his life had become a nightmare - each
Night they argued and he could not sleep.

For every argument she had an answer
While beneath it all, she adored her man -
Yet how she longed him all for herself.

Captain Herail felt trapped by Madam Herail;
He was reminded how he refused to send
Her away, at the General's orders of 'no wives.'

At a point he thought to leave his commission,
But it would have been a sacrifice too much -
With a great passion for his military profession.

He held onto his duty to fight for his country,
Yet his wife impaired his soldier’s efficiency -
Finally he was driven to demand she left him.

Other witness then came to the stand, as in
Major Rouchez, who stood at the bar on his
Crutches, to tell of a couple's mutual affection.

Roucheza, a friend of Herail, spoke of a night
In September when Frances' fate trembled -
About a fire, agreeing to sacrifice all for France.

If not their lives, then take their wives and their
Children - to say how Herail was prepared to put
His own life and wife upon the alter, for freedom.

The accused then stood with emotion, unable
To speak for some moments - to tell on a day
When his wife had locked him in his room.

Torn between love and duty, Captain Herail
Found how Madam Herail could not understand
Importance of his military duty and would not go.

Before the military court, head in hands, he told
How he kept domestic trouble from his colonel
And how he shot his wife, in frenzied moments.

But it was the pleas of Major Rouchez who said
'Pardon him and pity him as I pity him with
All my heart' - all was laid before military judges.

The government commissary stressed, despite
Extenuating circumstance pride prevented Herail
Telling the Colonel - the verdict should be guilty.

For the defence, Henri Robert's emotion raised
To say it was fate of a comrade not to refuse pity
When all of France needs all her children to fight.

All The Captain had left was his honour and for
His life to be sacrificed in duty - the court martial
Took only a few short minutes for the acquittal.

On two counts Captain Herail was found not
Guilty of voluntary homocide - inflicted wounds
And blows had caused the deceased's death.

Captain Herail left an officer soldier and a free man.

Poem ~ Army Food For a Lady - Wednesday, 24 March 1915

Cartoon of Madam Bechoff receiving army food- sketch by Jamie, taken from an original image that can be seen at: http://www.artic.edu/aic/collections/artwork/143200

Other images of the court scenes can be viewed at:

In the third week of January 1915
An arrest had been suddenly made
Of M. Desclaux, Chief de Cabinet,
For M. Cailaux and Army Paymaster.

Ten days later a Madame Bechoff,
From the firm of the same name -
Bechoff-David & Co the dressmakers,
In the palatial area of Place Vendome.

Desclaux was charged with taking
Many army stores of foodstuffs -
Madame Bechoff charged in receipt
Of the said stolen goods.

With the two prime ringleaders
Five others were also accused;
Two soldiers, Depuy and Pinson
Of the Commissariat Department.

Dozias and Verges, being two Postal
Employees and the wife of Dozias.
The court drama was also to witness
Many highly fashionable women.

An atmosphere of 'Cause Celebre'
Filled the courtroom - the discreetly
Dressed, amid officers. Soldiers with
Bandaged arms and heads, watched.

In uniform of a Lieutenant Colonel,
M. Desclaux stood straight - Madame
Bechof, dressed in black, hid her pale
Features behind a veil and big felt hat.

The centre point focused on a still life,
To suggest a grocers shop window, with
Piles of groceries tinned sardines, tea
Packets lain out as displayed evidence.

After all technicalities and report read
Juge d’instruction by Commandant
Marcay - stepped up the first witness,
Bechoff Housekeeper, Madame Lecadet.

The denouncement of her employer,
Was due to one of Desclaux’s delivery,
A Dragoons uniform - she had believed
Was for a German Officer's disguise.

Another servant said similar, in their
Feeling of disgust for such people's
Wealth - who would steal provisions
For soldiers, while the poor starved.

It was stated how Desclaux had
Also supplied other ladies - to amuse
The court, but not madame Bechoff,
Who stood to state their betrayal of her.

Questions turned to her anger at the
Servants - then how Desclaux had
Influenced her that the goods he sent
Were all his own to give to herself.

With her wealth she had no need
Of them, noting her household cost
Was £11,000 pa - how since the wars
Start she had donated £1000 to charity.

A letter of Bechoff to Desclaux said
How a lunch she gave did not cost much.
A reply was how she hated his sent
Gifts, asking him not to send more.

Another part of a Bechoff letter read
‘Don’t send anymore meat, mon gosse-
Little boy.’ Madame reacted to ask
Where are the other women in receipt?

Then, with suggestions of espionage,
Bechoff declared herself double patritotic,
A Frenchwoman and Alsatian - while
17 of her relations fought at the front.

A letter that the Police had received had
Prompted a watch on Madame Bechoff’s
House on Avenue Henri Martin - to make
their arrest 19 January during a delivery.

The arrest was of soldier Dozias who
Took three provision bags to her door.
Army parcel sacks addressed to Madame
Bechoff, with beef mutton rum and more.

A search of the property led to other finds
Of food packages – the search also turned
To Madame's villa at Savigny-sur-Orge,
To be found further army provisions.

Prisoner Desclaux was next on the stand,
To state he had no belief that he had
Done any wrong, only to be indiscreet -
He was an economist and not a miser.

The court laughted as Desclaux told how
He had given his detachment 20 francs
Of cigars at Christmas - the court had yet
To conclude case of Desclaux and Bechoff.
