Poem ~ Canada's Fear Spreads - Friday, 11 February 1916

Impression sketch of Rev. J.D. Morrow and Mayor 'Tommy' Church recruiting, 1916 - by Jamie. From an original image that can be seen at: http://torontoist.com/2014/06/meet-a-toronto-mayor-tommy-church/ [Accessed: 11 February 2016]

Dark clouds of suspicions
Could only spread outwards,
As a result of the serious
Fires on Canadian soil.

With Parliament buildings
In Ottawa, suspicious fires
In factories of munitions,
Sparked beliefs of plots.

Origins of those likeliest
Sympathisers of Germany
Could lurk everywhere, as in
Their Washington embassy.

Thursday 10 February 1916,
Gave witness to telephone
Calls to Montreal’s Mayor
In threats to set off a bomb.

The time planned for this
To blow up Montreal City
Hall, at the given time
Of 12.30 that afternoon.

Disturbed by Ottawa fire,
Montreal Mayor Mr Martin
Ordered increased guards,
And prepare fire apparatus.

All careful precautions set up
A panic of employees from
City Hall - who at the allotted
Hour, were busy elsewhere.

The time came and went
With nothing occurring,
Except realisation that this
Had been a practical joke.

'Tommy' Church, Mayor
Of Toronto, was a receiver
Of a 'black hand' letter -
In a slightly quieter threat.

One result of such matters,
Increased guards across
Many sites of public places,
And munitions factories.

In a brooding undercurrent
Of Ottawa's fire, called out
Demands for Germans to be
Dismissed in public situations.

A thought was aimed at the
Naturalised aliens - with no
Immediate actions, except
For increase of recruitment.

Poem ~ Bottle Bomb Plots - Thursday, 16 December 1915

Source: File: Von Papen; German Military Attaché in Washington, D.C..jpeg, [online] Available at: <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Franz_von_Papen> Accessed: 16 December 2015].

For other details, see full text of 'German plots and intrigues in the United States during the period of our neutrality,' by Earl E. Sperry ... assisted by Willis M. West ... Issued by the Committee on Public Information, Washington, D.C."  Source: <https://archive.org/stream/germanplotsintri00sper/germanplotsintri00sper_djvu.txt>

In intrigues - as intrigues usually are -
Involved connections, various strands
And plots - may become stuff of novels.

With arrest of Captain von Brincken,
Early December 1915, preparations
For his trial involved others evidence.

Johannes H. van Koolbergen, Dutch
And naturalised Canadian - involved
In the case, was detained in Canada.

Van Koolbergen, German sympathiser,
Was employed by American Germans,
In order to construct certain bombs.

Costing $100, explosives were packed
Into Thermos flasks - that workers may
Take without suspicion, around docks.

In every success of an allied boat
Destroyed, van Koolbergen would
Be paid a bonus for his good work.

In addition van Koolbergen had also
Gained expenses in his part, to blow
A trestle rail bridge, within Canada.

This was to hinder supply trains;
The proof of result being in paper
Clippings - yet without any witness.

After that pretend explosion made
On the Canadian-Pacific Railroad,
Van Koolbergen met von Brincken.

In a discussion at a hotel, devised
A flask bomb - pre set to explode
At a particular time - could he do this?

Working as longshoremen on docks
Of San Francisco, were 15 German
Men, who could easily place bombs.

Constructing an example dummy
Device, von Koolbergen showed
Von Brincken - to place it in a safe.

Von Koolbergen was then given
Orders to proceed into production -
But the request was later rescinded.

Reasons were to await calmness,
After bomb plots made in Eastern
United States - before proceeding.

Another string involved a Captain
Von Papen, attached to German
Embassy in Washington DC.

Papen swayed, by likes of intrigue,
To be involved in plans in costs
To destroy munitions factories.

A Captain of steamer, Sacramento,
Previously the German Steamer
Alexandria, also made his surrender.

The accusations that Captain T.A.
Anderson had violated neutral
Laws, to supply German ships.

Anderson had conveyed cargos
To warships; recorded in the ships
Log, of goods destined for Valparaiso.

Poem ~ German Threats, Federal Warrants - Monday, 6 December 1915

Impression sketch of Baron G. Wilhelm von Brincken. [online] see an original image at: <http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/2010218505/1915-12-28/ed-1/seq-5/> Accessed: 6 December 2015].

Emerged more American intrigue,
With plots to destroy commerce.
To result in arrest warrants; one
For A German Cavalry Captain
Baron G. Wilhelm von Brincken.

The Federal issue had emerged
From the Crowley case - accused
In securing funds, for destruction
Of Allied munitions ships - likely
Aleister Crowley, occultist and
A writer for the fatherland paper.

Robert Capelle was also targeted
For arrest; North German Lloyd line
Agent, believed as a witness in
Violations of US neutrality, by
Agents of Germany - a belief was
Capelle took refuge in California.

Likely to be aboard the Ottawa,
A German boat off Sausalito,
Within the San Francisco Bay.
A ploy to avoid his arrest had
Made by Captain von Brincken.

The claim on Friday 3 December
That he was German consulate
Attaché, yet later Washington
Advised the fact would not
Protect, him even if he held post -
Hours later Brincken surrendered.

The Captain was not detained
Though, as he was released
On bail for $10,000 - the case
Was seen to reflect the Buenz
New York case, in German
Acts of supplying their ships.

Poem ~ German American Hoax - Monday, 20 September 1915

Impression of California Eagle logo - by Jamie. See original at:
https://archive.org/details/caleagle?sort=-publicdate

A profitable hoax had emerged,
Created by German Americans;
Claiming destruction of entire
British fleet - with photographs.

A trail dated back to August 29
Of the 'California Eagle' magazine,
Copied by Westminster Gazette -
Saturday September 18 1915.

Issued in no. 45 of volume 23,
For a one and only appearance -
In one sunny Californian day,
Made profits for their publishers.

The reproduced Gazette article -
Professed by a heavy American
Typeface - for the Berlin claim
Of British losses of 40,000 men.

Laid out in black and white,
Evidence lay in a lengthy list
Of supposed lost British ships;
U.S. press reacted in enquiries.

The wild claims, prompting
investigations, ran to hundreds
Of dollars, as 'California Eagle's'
Sales soared, over that one day.

Poem ~ American-German Assassin - Tuesday, 13 July 1915

Impression sketch of Eric Muenter after his arrest - by Jamie. See the original at: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eric_Muenter#/media/File:Erich_M%C3%BCnter.jpg

In words sent to New Orleans
Times-Picayune, openly told
Of an assassinations plot and
Plans to destroy British ships,
Moving from American Ports.

The writer of the letter, under
The name of Pearce - a scholar
And partner of the assassin  -
Erich Meunter, openly told
Of intentions to kill two men.

German-American Meunter,
With false Name Frank Holt,
A known dynamiter, targeted
Ambassador Sir Spring Rice,
And the financier J.P. Morgan.

2 July, Meunter, on discovery
Of the senate chamber locked,
Hid a package of dynamite in
Senate reception, for a midnight
Explosion - to blow at 11.40 p.m.

In Meunter's given explanation
Was making noise in an appeal
For peace - fleeing, Meunter put
A time bomb on SS Minnehaha,
A ship carrying British munitions.

Travelling on to Glen Cove Long
Island and home of Mr Morgan -
Meunter intended to murder
'The Ambassador to hell', Cecil
Spring Rice with the US financer.

Meunter had been enraged
By Morgan's assisting British
Against Germany, with large
US finances  - Meunter stood
Before Mr Morgan with a gun.

In two shots at the financer,
Meunter wounded his groin,
Before being hit by the butler,
With a lump of coal - arrested
The assassin was charged.

Jailed for his crimes, Meunter
Committed suicide - then two
Days later an explosion took
Place on the SS Minnehaha -
Making only minor damage.

Pearce went on to say how
Bombs were on other boats -
The navy acted with warning
Both vessels - as his apostle
Stated, Meunter was no crank.

Pearce proclaimed Meunter
Gave him principles and ideals.
How he was a true German,
Who advised many passengers
Against travel on the Lusitania.

Meunter had actually warned
The famous theater producer,
Charles Frohman, against
Sailing on the fated Lusitania;
In belief Meunter calls on him.

The dead man urging Pearce
To act - who claimed to have
Dynamite stores to destroy city
Of New Orleans - prompting US
Secret Service set to find Pearce.

Poem ~ Protests of German-Americans - Wednesday, 7 April 1915

Impression Sketch of Cover of Fatherland April 7th 1915 - By Jamie Mann the original can be viewed at: <http://www.rarenonfiction.com/?page=shop/flypage&product_id=179566> [Accessed: 7 April 2015]

Directed towards the seat of American Power,
Was raised an organisation,
By American Germans, regarding a petition
For the facilitation of food parcels -
Insisting that they be sent onto Central Empire.

Directed towards the seat of American Power,
Was raised an organisation,
By American Germans - regarding a petition
For the facilitation of food parcels -
Insisting that they be sent onto Central Empire.

In an April issue of The Fatherland newspaper,
Came statement by Dr. Dernburg -
The reaction being one of great displeasure,
How the postmaster General
Had made open refusal to accept their parcels.

These parcels being separated, at the senders
Risk  - The Fatherland’s angered
Statement, believed that such allied confiscation
Would be easily made for parcels
To be kept by Britain - showing how America
Lies about its own neutrality.

Giving into British demands, merely provided
Aid to enemies of German
And Austria Hungary - America’s neutrality
Is therefore fake - a counter
Theory was German American reply as false.

The Fatherland argument centred over the British
Blockade, in trying to gain
American sympathy, over a situation regarding
Starvation in the fatherland;
Their reason, as a lack of fairness in US Press.

With German American backed monies, to total
£400,000, ready to hand over
To the USA - to create a great and new fearless
’Independent Newspaper’;
The reality likely to be a Germany backed plan.

The real intention was a substantial newspaper
Controlled by German Americans -
In promotion of their Fatherland's propaganda -
Other American papers were
Already on their side - so no single paper could
Be accused of lacking fair play.
