Poem ~ Cat Rescues Officer - Thursday, 10 December 1914

In defence of the French frontier,
The 2nd Battalion Grenadier Guards,
Was involved in the heavy fighting.
A son of a Baronet, Lieutenant Lloyd,
Fought with the Guards Regiment -
To experience the desperate
Conditions, to hold the allied lines.

Becoming detached within the conflict,
From his regiment, Lieutenant Lloyd
Was then suffering great fatigue.
Straying from day into night,
He knew the risks of exposure.
In darkness, the Lieutenant luckily
Found shelter, in an isolated outhouse.

Reported as missing, Lieutenant Lloyd
Was assumed dead by the war office.
In fact, suffering with exhaustion,
The man remained asleep in that hut,
For almost three days.

On discovery of the officer,
It was found he had been saved
From exposure, by a feline friend –
A lucky cat had been found,
Curled up, about his neck.

Without such attended warmth,
It was felt Lieutenant Lloyd would
Have quietly, and slowly perished.
Subsequently the War Office -
Amended its previous statement
To say Lieutenant Lloyd was alive.

On the story of his son’s rescue,
By the comforts of a French cat,
Sir Marteine Lloyd, 2nd Baronet,
Speaking at Llangynllo for aid
Of Belgian refugee - proudly told
Of his son’s escape from death.

Poem ~ Soldier Falls from Cliff - Tuesday, 10 November 1914

At Arbroah on 9 November,
Within the region
Of Dundee, Scotland -
Blew a severe gale,
To cause a great tragedy.

A Territorial soldier,
Lance Corporal Hussey,
Aged 22, from Cardiff -
Was stationed at Forfarshire.
Hussey, involved in creation
Of a shelter, to use
Corrugated iron sheeting.

Atop an open space of cliffs,
Within the strong winds,
Lance Corporal Hussey,
Saw one corrugated sheet
Being easily blown about.

As he moved to regain it,
Both he and the sheet,
Were caught by the gale,
To be blown from the cliff.
Falling some 300 feet,
Lance Corporal Hussey,
Fell to his tragic death.

Poem ~ Smoking:Order of War Office - Tuesday, 10 November 1914

Among the important supplies
For the War Office, providing troops,
Is the need of better tobacco -
Thus creating important discussions
Between Lord Kitchener
And Imperial Institute
To resolve this vital issue.

British Colonies over recent years,
Have produced premium
Tobacco over in the Americas -
Also to be included are -
Rhodesia and Nyasaland.
Most recently Canadian tobacco
Leaves have built a market within
Britain - But quality has been absent.

Lord Kitchener keenly negotiated
Specifications of the W.O. department,
For good quality tobacco,
From both Protectorates and Colonies.

So soldiers will be assured - they will
Be able to breathe more easily,
Knowing that quality cigarettes
Will now have their name on the packet.
