Poem ~ Brutal Fight On Isonzo Line - Wednesday, 5 July 1916

Impression sketch of Italian light infantry of the 1st Alpini Regiment on Monte Nero, during the Isonzo campaigns. [online] See original image at: <http://www.shotinthedark.info/wp/?p=55479> [Accessed: 05 July 2016]

On higher ground an alternative
Struggle was made, in continuation
Of an Italian front, with the empire
Of the Austro-Hungarian's struggle
Against resistance of Italian allies...

In continuation between campaigns
The division of battles, had seen
Five battles of the Isonzo - March
1916 from French pressure, Italy’s
Forces edged about the Soča river...

Austria-Hungary had intent to cripple
Italy, seen as betrayers of the triple
Alliance - the Isonzo front became
A significant stretch in the country’s
North, named after the province city...

Some seven hundred miles away
From the Somme, lay this barren
Ground - in final two days of intense
Artillery that rained down on Somme,
The afternoon of Thursday 30 June...

Saw moves on Monte San Michele
Slopes - over night of 29th, Italians
Crawled from trenches at lowest
Point of the hill - to climb towards
Austrian trenches cut out of rock...

In the stark daylight, awareness
Of the manoeuvre, led Austrians
To open fire - their machine guns
Rattled over the rocks at Italian
Heads - rough ground gave cover...

From where they rose in a rush
Of hand to hand encounters -
In tones close to French uniforms,
Two sides clashed in a struggle
For rugged barren land - until...

In early hours of 1 July having
Been through bombardment,
Movement of air gave Austrians
The advantage - they released
Gas that began to spill down...

The hills rocky edges - pushed
By the wind, yellow sulphur
Fumes made its way to forces
Of Italians, who made no move
But to quickly put on masks...

Through the yellow fog they
Still made their attack - while
Breeze dispersed the enemy's
Poisoned fog, to catch edges
Of Austrian lines, the cloud...

Lingered - fighting in masks
Made it hard to breath and
Restricted vision - it seemed
Both sides were sinking - then
A rush of wind caught the gas...

Deadly vapours took a final lift
Away from the field of battle -
Thankful Italians shrugged
Off their masks to rush forth -
Taking 400 choking Austrians.

Poesia ~ Gas sull'Isonzo Line - Mercoledì, 5 luglio 1916

Su un terreno più elevato un'alternativa
La lotta è stata fatta, in continuità
Di un fronte italiano, con l'impero
Della lotta della austroungarico
Contro la resistenza degli alleati italiani ...

In continuità tra le campagne
La divisione di battaglie, aveva visto
Cinque battaglie dell'Isonzo - Marzo
1916 dalla pressione francese, in Italia
Forze bordate sul fiume Isonzo ...

L'Austria-Ungheria aveva intenzione di paralizzare
L'Italia, visti come traditori della tripla
A

Teste - terreno accidentato dato copertura ...

Indugiato - combattimenti in maschere
Rendeva difficile respirare e visioni
Limitato - sembrava Entrambe le parti
Sono state affondando - allora
Una folata di vento catturato il gas ...

Vapori mortali hanno preso un passaggio
Finale lontano dal campo di battaglia -
Grato italiani si strinse nelle spalle
Fuori le loro maschere di correre via -
Prendendo 400 soffocamento austriaci...

Poem ~ Montenegro: Resistance And Fall - Wednesday, 19 January 1916

Source: File: postcard showing the retreat by the Serbian army and civilians through the harsh winter mountains of Montenegro - winter of 1915-1916.jpg. [online] see an original image at: <http://www.bl.uk/collection-items/pec> Accessed: 19 January 2016].

Within the midst of Europe
A small central country,
With the name Black Mountain,
Stood out in defiance
Across waters of Italy; Montenegro.

Without adherence to any
Neutrality, Montenegro
Stood aside Serbia, to declare war
On the Central powers -
In fighting help of Serbia and France.

Austria-Hungary sent a force
To invade Montenegro,
Which resisted from fortified Lovcen -
Kotor taken by enemy,
Came under Montenegrin bombardment.

Within the autumn of 1914,
Montenegro resistance
Held back Austrian invasion -
On the verge to free
Sarajevo - all changed December 1915.

German, Austria-Hungarian
And Bulgaria armies,
Took Serbia to force Montenegrin
Army, which all led
To a different situation by 1916's start.

Into the depth of 1915 winter,
Army of Montenegro
Had fought under harsh conditions  -
As weather and low supplies
Increasingly took their toll on them.

Within the vagueness of actual
Battle, Montenegrin
Army held fast in the Mojkovac
Village - as 6 January saw
Austro-Hungarian Artillery attacks.

This came to culminate on day
Of Orthodox Christmas -
When the 7 January became bloody
Christmas for Montenegro -
Army bloodied Austria-Hungarians.

In the dark depths of knee deep
Snow, bloody losses
On either side - yet numbers
Of Austro Hungarian
Attacks held back by Montenegro.

Yet success can be unstable,
As in a telegram
Reportedly from Vienna, revealed
Negotiations of capitulation
Between Austria and Montenegro.

Details revealed within
Neue Freie Presse,
Were presences of Montenegrin
Ministers, with artillery
Major at Austrian advanced Post.

They sought to start their final
Negotiation of surrender,
To begin by unconditional laying
Down of Montenegrin arms -
At Cettinje the Ministers remained.

From these intermediaries
Emerged further
Unconditional terms, to lay
Down all modern
Arms, with all heirloom weapons.

They would be laid down,
By the collecting of all
Montenegrins within military
Service to gather
Together, in form of a human wood.

Then as in a beat, all
Would be searched
By breadth and length, to halt
Formation of bands
Or any guerilla warfare formations.

These men of Montenegro,
Which included those
Of advanced ages, would
Be moved to be held
Within an assigned district.

Then there was the situation
Of women combatants -
Who had maintained methods
Of communications -
Their treatment was different.

Payments to these women
Had been halted by
The king for some time, whereby
A return home women and
Men on leave, built family security.

By that situation many women
Would be left in villages -
Held along with surrendered towns
And communication
Methods - in particular the railways.

Poem ~ Mountain Wars - Sunday, 12 September 1915

Impression sketch of a priest saying mass to Italian troops on the Italo-Austrian front in the Tyrolean Mountains, 1915 - by Jamie. See original at: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/258253359857777002/

In part of the frontline where
Winter had apparently arrived -
For the situation on the Alps
Prompted Italian preparations,
For impending winter months.

Officials conferred in Rome,
Over 10 September 1915, in
Systemizations over townships,
Then under military forces -
Numbering hundred and three.

Additionally was question
Over Italy taking a greater
Part in the war front - as well
As considerations in their
Munitions productions.

The Italian cabinet meeting
Headed by minister of war,
To reaffirm their armies met
All needs, in winter equipment,
For fights on Carso and Alps.

For some time already,
Winter preparations had
Been made - with trenches,
Huts all supplied and well
Equipped with stoves.

Despite wintery conditions,
Advances were seen to be
Continuing - as in Trentino
Communes taken, as Austrian
Forts became ineffective.

Austrian retaliation had
Turned, to attempt reduction
Of their lost communes down
Into rubble, forcing refugees
To seek shelter in Italy.

Questioning of prisoners
Suggested Austrian reserves
Had been used - sent over
To Galicia to remain static on
Isonzo-Carso, Trentino lines.

The suggestion was the fight
In Galicia, led to losses
Of 50,000 Austrian soldiers -
Under Russian forces,
To recall Roumanian corps.

The belief was thought that
Little more than four army
Austrian corps remained -
On Serbo-Roumanian front;
Their presence spread out.

While a German presence
Relatively small, Austrian
Corps had two in Transylvania,
One in Banat and remainder
In Danube, Drina and Save.

Poem ~ Deadly Sister of Mercy - Monday, 9 August 1915

Impression sketch of Bogus Red Cross - by Jamie.

Between the Baltic and Black Sea,
Stretching North to the South,
To take in most of Eastern Europe,
And into a depth of central Europe,
Was based the Second Patriotic War.

Commonly known as Eastern Front,
Where the Imperial Russian
Army faced their foes. It was likely
Along this front, that an underhand
Act occurred, by an Austrian party.

The holding of a Russian trench
One day made witness
Of an Austrian Red Cross party -
Among the number that stepped
Out onto the open desolated
Earth, stood a Sister of Mercy.

This was the name given to such
Women in role of Russian
Nurses - the shape that emerged
With this Red Cross team wore
A white headdress and a cross.

They slowly moved forward, towards
The occupied Russian trench,
In order to reach the wounded men
About - when from under her white
Smock, the Sister of Mercy aimed.

Producing guns the party opened
Fire on the Russian defence -
The sister quick to aim and maime,
Until the reaction of the Russians
Cut her down to foil the trick.

With the fraudulent Red Cross act
Stopped, Russians came out
To inspect the remains - searching
The bodies found the Mercy Sister
Was in fact an Austrian Officer.

Catene montuose, visto italiano
Alpini continuano il loro successo
Contro opposizioni austriache.

Nord Est del Cuestaltra picco
Ha visto l'azione sul monte Maldeta -
Conosciuto come un settore che
Custodiva via di passaggio tra i forti
Di Maborghetto e Landro.

Trasformato in una fortezza austriaca
Le rocce del Monte Maldeta
Era stata tagliata in trincea ruvido
Sistemi diffondersi sui vantage
Punti con le batterie posizionate.

In alta manovre precari
Per i preparati sono stati attacchi
Realizzato dagli alpini, per raggiungere
Il vertice Maldeta; precedentemente
Solo Accede da mulattiere.

Un rush finale fatta a 4000 piedi,
Guidato austriaci dalla vetta -
Tenue presa italiano minacciato
Da batterie austriache - tornitura
Sul loro ex fortezza perduta.

Determinato contatore austriaca
Gli attacchi hanno affrontato problemi
Uguali a tali altezze - con piccola
Riacquista nella lotta per combattere,
Alta relative all'altezza della Carinzia.

Eppure la presa Alpini di vertice
Spinto indietro austriaco
Le piste vicine; Artiglieria
Austriaca colpito da italiano
Batterie - la lotta è sceso tranquillo.

Sudari di nebbia avevano indugiato
Per qualche giorno - quando le nubi
Sollevato, sparando rinnovata su forti
Di Sesto e Lando - feroce le batterie
Hanno sparato in Boite. Cadore.

Con le difese austriache rotti,
Attacchi simultanei, sia a Forte
Hensel, Malborghetto poi al momento
Del Carso - a fare guadagni,
In uno spazio di valori strategiche.

Già con Granudor presa
La penisola istriana sarebbe
Venite sotto italiani se il nord
Di Tarvia se l'attacco ha fatto
passagway cadere agli italiani.

Con Granudor già preso
La penisola istriana sarebbe
Venite sotto italiani dovrebbero
Il percorso a nord di Tarvia essere
Aperto fino a forze italiane.
