Poem ~ Gunner Gains Medal - Saturday, 24 October 1914

A keen young Gunner, F.G. Powe, Aged 20,
Of the 41st Brigade, Royal Field Artillery,
Was recovering quickly in Bristol, from wounds,
Was by this date, due to return to the front.
Gunner Powe recognised for his work in the field,
At Villers Cotterets, while manning a gun.
Facing a superior enemy force he received
Shrapnel wounds in both legs – He refused orders
To gain medical attention, choosing to hobble
About, on a single leg, he assisted the crew,
In their tight corner - first to get the guns hitched
To the horses - after which he was commended
For his bravery by his commanding officer,
To be awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal.
