Poem ~ Peace Time Tragedy in War - Thursday, 12 November 1914

A young officer,
Lieutenant John Cooper,
With the Army Service Corps,
Was motoring on Tuesday,
10 November - setting out
To re-join his regiment.
Driving from Hale in Cheshire,
Down to London.

Mrs Cooper accompanied
Her husband - after some
80 miles the happy couple
Reached Atherstone.

Lieutenant Cooper,
Was travelling at a speed
Of some 33 miles per hour,
As he attempted to avoid
A baker’s cart –
The car came to grief.
In the resulting accident,
Mrs Cooper Was killed.
The inquest gave verdict,
Of accidental death.

Aptly, notably and coldly,
Are some lines,
Beneath the story,
Advertising a company
That insures against
Personal Accidents.
