Tuesday - A Call To Ireland
By the following
day martial law
Was declared,
By Lord Lieutenant
Lord Wimborne -
Brigadier General
William Lowe, was given civil powers,
In order to force
Rebellion into
groups of isolation.
Not knowing how
large a force
They faced, came Lowe's
1,269 troops in Dublin - from early
Hours soldiers armed
With machine guns held buildings,
A hotel and club, which
Overlooked St
Stephens Green.
With dawn
breaking, British aimed
On rebels who
retreated
Into the Royal
College of Surgeons.
All roads to Dublin
castle
Were secured - while the anarchists
Headquarters was
thought
To be Liberty
Hall - would be cut off.
All attempts to
repair railway lines
Came under renegade
Attacks, from
Annesley Bridge -
With some
soldiers
Captured - a two
hour battle ended
By British
retreat - a standoff
Starts at Phibsborough barricades.
Starts at Phibsborough barricades.
Field
artillery destroyed the roads
Forcing Irish withdrawal -
Back in Dublin, leader Patrick Pearse
Once again
emerged -
Following the
proclamation, he read
Out a new manifesto,
To boost support
from Dublin crowds.
Before Nelson's
Pillar citizens were
Called on to
assist -
But majority did
not want the effects
Of war on the
city -
While the intent
continued to stand
Against British
rule,
The second day of
rebellion ended.
