Poem ~ Bottom Plug - Saturday, 22 May 1915

Impression sketch of hole being plugged - by Jamie.

When true facts become yarns,
That happens to be true, such
Unlikely truths are stuff of myths.

The ship Ocean was in process
Of sinking into deep waters;
Alongside her was a destroyer.

When a Turkish shell intended
For the Ocean cut into side
Of the destroyer, a young stoker,

On seeing this, quickly took action -
To say that he pushed into ‘the
Breach, a bulky part of his anatomy.

A rear part for which the civil world
Had invented to use on a chair.
The seawater was firmly plugged.

The ship's stoker smirked happily
With self satisfaction, holding
Position until ship's side made safe.
