A first warning
of its kind,
Emerged in a case
of the Prince
Albert Inn,
Trafalgar Street,
Brighton, re
Early Closing Order.
Restrictions of
drinking
Had already been
introduced -
In order that
workers
In factories did
not get drunk.
A need was to
prevent
All war efforts
being hindered -
After the legal
hour,
Police called on
the public house.
Several soldiers
were sat
In the Albert Inn
drinking beer.
Being against the
order
Of closure in a
military area.
Summons was
raised
At lessee,
Richard Alabone
And Charles Penn,
Manager of Prince
Albert Inn.
In defence was stated,
That the drinking
soldiers
Were finishing
what
They had bought,
prior to time.
Yet the fact that
soldiers
Being on premises
after hours
Was technical
offence;
Both were fined
20 shillings.
